Questions & answers

Cocopeat is a multipurpose growing medium that is very easy to use. This medium is a high air-filled porosity and has a high capacity for holding water making it the ideal soil source for all plant growing applications. Cocopeat comes in compressed briquettes and bales. Moreover, Coco peat is an excellent substrate for vegetables, fruits and cut flower crops. It has many applications as an effective soil conditioner and soil-free substrate. Cocopeat has innumerable advantages in the agricultural field and in domestic gardening. Some of these advantages include potting mix, horticulture cultivation, nursery beds for seedlings, in gardens to conserve water, orchids, mushroom cultivation, and plantation crops etc. The main advantage is that the valuable nitrogen that is preserved in Cocopeat and moisture content that is retained mainly in potting mix in home gardening.

Cocopeat supports a healthy growth for all plants, as the do not become compacted hence allowing good ventilation for the roots increasing growing processes. The fibres also have a very high cation exchange capacity meaning that fertilizers are not easily leached from media.

Unwashed cocopeat is the natural raw form of the product, which has a higher EC (electrical conductivity) level. Washed cocopeat means to have been cleaned using clean, natural spring water to lower the EC (electrical conductivity) level. Buffered cocopeat (sometimes known as treated) has been treated to reduce the Potassium and Sodium Chloride levels, and to increase the Nitrogen level. It also has a lower EC (electrical conductivity) level.

If there is no contamination, Cocopeat can be re-used for several crop cycles, depending on the plant requirements and the grower’s needs and preferences. We recommend flushing the coir between cycles and replenish with additional quantity if required.

Our Cocopeat comes from inland grown coconuts which have a naturally low level of sodium present. Furthermore, our products are processed by aging and washed to obtain a very low EC, every step of the process is carefully monitored with precision. Other Cocopeat products are usually not processed under monitored conditions, such as coastal grown coconuts, substandard storage, processing leading to the possibility of unwanted pathogens. We offer the highest quality Cocopeat every time, please ask for a sample so you can perform an independent laboratory analysis.

Since the Cocopeat is natural, it is completely biodegradable. However, it retains its structure and absorbency for several years after planting, meaning that the same coir can be frequently used for several years. After use, it can be added to the ground as a soil conditioner without any adverse implications for the environment. It can simply be laid on plastic or concrete and irrigated with a sprinkler system.
